TOBIAS SALUTES CORPORATE LEADERSHIP IN GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST AIDS
3M, FedEx and DaimlerChrysler Execs Join at NYSE Opening Bell to Highlight Leadership
October 13, 2004

Ambassador Randall Tobias, President Bush's envoy on the fight against global HIV/AIDS, rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange today and highlighted the leadership of several corporations in the fight against the pandemic across the world.

Among the six companies represented by top executives at the NYSE this morning with Ambassador Tobias were 3M and Federal Express, who maintain global workplace policies for their HIV-positive employees, and were cited as case studies in a recent corporate survey by the AIDS Responsibility Project's Stigma Reduction Program in Latin America. Also represented at the event was DaimlerChrysler, which maintains a model employee care program in South Africa for employees with HIV/AIDS, and was featured in ARP's recently released documentary "Stepping Up: America Responds to Global AIDS."

"We are proud to stand with exceptional companies that have model programs in urging the broader business community across the world to step up and join this fight," said Abner Mason, ARP executive director, who also attended the NYSE event today. "It is only through building stronger partnerships between companies, governments and nongovernmental organizations that we will save lives, reduce stigma, broaden care and treatment and eventually win the fight against this disease. AIDS is not only a public health threat - it's a growing threat to global economic development. The United Nations and the World Bank have documented that AIDS has hampered economic growth in every region of the world, and it is a threat that respects no borders or boundaries. We hope this message will resonate throughout the stock exchange this morning that it is not only a matter of human compassion that we fight AIDS, but a matter of economic necessity."

Also joining Ambassador Tobias at the NYSE this morning were executives from Ford Motor Company, whose Mexico division was also featured in the ARP corporate survey; Becton Dickinson & Company, Getty Images, Hewlett-Packard and Viacom.

AIDS Responsibility Project (ARP) is a U.S.-based nongovernmental organization with a global reach, dedicated to building public-private partnerships to help identify and remove barriers to treatment and care for underserved populations, promoting policy development to eliminate stigma and discrimination, educating the public on the challenges faced in the global fight against AIDS and providing strategic and technical assistance to partner organizations throughout the world.
